The Nora Announces Its 2007 Spring Season
Judging by the weather, it feels as if winter has just begun. But at The Nora Theatre Company things are quickly heating up. We are in full swing as spring 2007 gets underway, promising three months filled with an array of theater experiences. For nineteen years The Nora has brought high-caliber artistry to the Boston stage. The tradition continues this spring as we present a gripping American drama and intriguing new works by local playwrights.
A Contemporary American Classic:
The Nora Theater Company delves into the canon of one of our country's most gifted and esteemed playwrights to present Buried Child by Sam Shepard (True West, Fool for Love) from April 19th through May 6th. This Pulitzer Prize winning play, directed by The Nora's Associate Director Daniel Gidron, depicts the corrosive effects of a long-held secret. Shepard masterfully captures a Midwestern American family ravaged by guilt and shame, and offers a slim chance for redemption with the unearthing of their dark past. After a decade of Off-Broadway success, the 1979 premiere of Buried Child launched Shepard's mainstream career. It's no mystery why: The play remains as provocative and moving today as it was three decades ago. Buried Child will be presented in the intimate setting of Boston Playwrights' Theatre. Tickets are on sale now!
New at the Nora:
Following the close of Buried Child, the annual "New Plays at The Nora" series will feature four nights of staged readings of selected works-in-progress. These free public events are dedicated to furthering the writing of regional female playwrights. Not only do you get a sneak peek at the emerging work of some of the Boston area's most talented writers, the playwrights also receive valuable insights into their scripts by hearing them read aloud and receiving audience feedback. This year's playwrights are Kate Snodgrass, whose Observatory Conditions will be read on May 13th and 14th, and Amy Merrill, whose play Silver Spoon with songs by composer Si Kahn will be read on June 17th and 18th.
Training for the Marathon:
We're also looking forward to participating in the annual Boston Theater Marathon, another tradition at The Nora. This popular event benefiting the Theatre Community Benevolent Fund features a full day of one-act plays by regional writers, performed "marathon style": five 10-minute plays are presented each hour for 10 hours straight, followed by a smashing party for all involved. The Nora Theatre Company is among the 50 participating theater organizations that each produce one play. Please join us for a day of total theater immersion on May 20th at the Calderwood Pavilion at the Boston Center for the Arts and discover our gem of an entry!
