Profiting from Exploitation In the United States, approximately 86% of agricultural workers were born outside of the states and 45% of all of those workers are undocumented. From 2010 to 2019, the amount of H-2A workers increased from 79,000 to 258,000. These essential workers have been subject to decades of exploitation. A corn farm worker said in a 2021 interview for The Guardian, the work day began at 3 or 4am and continued until 3 or 4pm with just one 15-minute lunch break. They made only $225 for 15 days of work.
The Complications of Dreaming Since its inception in 2012, DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) has provided temporary relief from deportation to approximately 800,000 young people. However, the application process and regulations are more complicated than one might expect. The following are but a few of the restrictions for applicants: Less than 31 years old as of 6/15/2012 Came to the U.S. before 16th birthday Lived continuously in U.S. from 6/15/2007 onwards Were physically present in US on 6/15/2012 and at the time of applying
ICE Expansion to Local Enforcers The early days of the Trump presidency saw a reinvigoration of outreach to local jurisdictions for new 287(g) agreements. These agreements essentially allow local law enforcement agencies to act as ICE agents. 287(g) agreements have lead to increased racial profiling, civil rights violations and the isolation of immigrant communities due to fear of deportation and losing family members. There are currently 142 total jurisdictions across the country that have 287(g) agreements.
School of the Americas Established in 1946, the School of the Americas opened with the stated mission of developing and conducting instruction for armed forces of Latin America using the most doctrinally sound, relevant, and cost effective training programs possible. It has trained over 60,000 students. Many believe that SOA has contributed in no small part to the destabilization of many Latin American countries due to graduates becoming military dictators and many (including but not limited to) have been implicated in the violation of human rights.
Neo-Imperialism by Proxy The United States has a long and documented history of sponsoring coups and overthrowing leaders in South America. Thus molding countries and policies to be more agreeable with U.S. economic and political interests. For example: in 1954, CIA operation code-named, "PBSuccess", led to a coup that deposed the democratically elected president of Guatemala, Jacobo Árbenz and replaced him with military dictator, Carlos Castillo Armas. Unfortunately for Guatemalans, this would not be the last time the U.S. interfered in politics and government.
