John Kuntz
John Kuntz (he/him) is a playwright, actor, director and solo performer. He has performed with Central Square Theatre in Frankenstein (Victor), Hysteria (Salvador Dali), The Caretaker (Astin) and Mere Mortals (Various Roles) among others. He has also worked with the Huntington, ART, Speakeasy Stage Company, Lyric Stage, Central Square Theatre, Commonwealth Shakespeare Company, Boston Playwrights, The New Rep and many others. Acting credits include A Midsummer Night’s Dream; As You Like It; MacBeth; The Tempest and Much Ado About Nothing with Commonwealth Shakespeare Company; The Antiquities; People, Places and Things, Necessary Monsters and The Prom with Speakeasy Stage Company and Our Town and ART with The Lyric Stage. He is the writer/performer of several solo shows, including The Salt Girl (Elliot Norton Award, Outstanding New Play), Freaks; Party Poopers; Actorz with a Z and Starfuckers. He is also the author of over 15 full-length plays including Necessary Monsters; The Hotel Nepenthe; After School Special; Sing Me To Sleep; Jump/Rope; Jasper Lake, and The Annotated History of the American Muskrat. He is the recipient of five Elliot Norton Awards, two IRNE Awards, a New York International Fringe Festival Award, the Michael Kanin and Paula Vogel Playwrighting Awards, a 2015 MCC Fellowship Award in Dramatic Writing and was an inaugural Playwrighting Fellow with the Huntington Theatre Company. He is currently a lecturer in Theatre, Dance and Media at Harvard University and is a Professor of Theatre at The Boston Conservatory at Berklee. As a Director, he directed the professional Boston premiere of Blasted by Sarah Kane with Off The Grid Theatre Company (Elliot Norton Award, Outstanding Director) and directed/curated the world premieres of several original devised works at The Boston Conservatory at Berklee, including Graceland; Cosmic Certainty; a soft murder; Mercy Hospital; The Museum of Useless Desire; Capsule #613; Giovanni’s Room (an adaptation of the novel by James Baldwin), Moist; The Nightmare Box; All My Pretty Ones as well as the first incarnations of his plays The Hotel Nepenthe and Necessary Monsters. He has also directed Jean Genets’ The Balcony and Peter Barnes’ Red Noses for the Boston Conservatory Mainstage.
