Gowri Vijayakumar

Gowri Vijayakumar, Associate Professor of Sociology and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality StudiesGowri Vijayakumar is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Brandeis University. Her current research focuses on gender, work, and migration in the city of Bangalore, focusing on sex workers, garment workers, and street vendors. She has worked closely with sex worker and transgender activist groups in Bangalore on research and creative work, including theater, oral history, and film. She is the author of At Risk: Indian Sexual Politics and the Global AIDS Crisis, the co-editor of Sociology of South Asia: Postcolonial Legacies, Global Imaginaries, and the co-writer of A Small Step in a Long Journey: A Memoir by Akkai Padmashali. She teaches courses on social movements; gender & sexuality; HIV and AIDS, and the sociology of love. She is also working on a project on the politics of love, romance and sexuality in South Asia and the diaspora.
