The World is My Home: A Performance and Talkback with Girl Talk Theatre

Girl Talk Theatre invites you to experience The World is My Home, their latest original production, which will dig deep on Prejudice, Dignity and Homelessness. They also want to talk about Hot Pants and Blue Jeans. Curious? Please join us on May 1 & 2, 2017.

As a special event for ArtWeek, join us after each show for a talkback with Artistic Director/Founder of Girl Talk, Stephanie Cotton-Snell; Associate Director, Mary C. (Mimi) Huntington; and the actors, to learn more about how Girl Talk Theatre’s work with poor, homeless and marginalized women creates powerful works of art.

About Girl Talk: The mission of Girl Talk Theatre is to use the art of theatre to empower poor, homeless and marginalized women through the art of theatre.  We offer a safe and nurturing environment for the telling of their stories by teaching theatre workshops out of which we create performance opportunities for these women.  Since our founding nine years ago, we have taught classes at Rosie’s Place, Women’s Lunch Place and On The Rise.  Our students have performed and taught workshops in a variety of other venues including the Mass Poetry Festival, New England Fringe Theatre Festival, YMCA Cambridge, Tufts University and Berklee/Boston Conservatory.

Entrance to both the show and talkback is free, but we encourage you to RSVP here:

The Role of Theater in the Here & Now

Tony Kushner wrote Homebody/Kabul in 2001, and the play opened just after 9/11. He was called ‘eerily prescient’- but it is the artist’s job to keep one ear to the ground, to know which way the wind is blowing. Kushner, and other theater artists, have provided safe ways to engage in the dangerous conversations we must have if we are to live fully, and together, in a just society. What do we – artists, and audiences – want from our theater in this historic moment?

A special event for ArtWeek, join us for an exclusive post-show talkback with Debra Wise who is both the Artistic Director of the Underground Railway Theater, and the sole performer in Tony Kushner’s Homebody. Hear from Debra about her history of making politically engaged and responsive theater and share your thoughts on the roles and responsibilities of creative artists, and audience members, in times of political unrest.

The post-show talkback is free, and does not require a ticket to the performance to participate. To purchase tickets to the performance, CLICK HERE.

The House That Will Not Stand

The House That Will Not Stand is the first play in The God’s Closet Reading Series presented by The Front Porch Arts Collective, in residence at Central Square Theater. Tickets are free. Please note this reading is now full. A waiting list has been started.

New Orleans, 1836.  Following an era of French colonial rule and relative racial acceptance, Louisiana’s free people of color are now prospering. Beatrice Albans, a free woman of color, has become one of New Orleans’ wealthiest women through her romantic relationship with a very rich white man.

When her lover dies, Beatrice imposes a period of mourning on herself and her daughters. However, as the summer heat intensifies, the foundations of freedom Beatrice has built for herself and their three unwed daughters begin to crumble. Society is changing, and racial divides are growing.  As the members of the household turn on each other in a fight for survival, it could cost them everything.

This production is directed by Dawn Meredith Simmons. It will feature Chris Everett, Victoria George, Amber Hood, Sonya Raye, Cheryl Singleton, Dayenne CB Walters, and Dorcas Thete.

The God’s Closet Reading Series is funded, in part, by The Boston Foundation as part of the Live Arts Boston initiative.
